Wildfire Defensible Space Landscaping Guide for Spokane Homeowners

If your property is in or near a fire-risk zone in the Spokane area, Washington’s defensible space rules require maintaining managed vegetation zones around structures — and starting July 2026, compliance will be verified during real estate transactions.

The Zone System

Zone 0 (0–5 ft from structure)

Must be kept completely free of combustible material — no dead vegetation, non-combustible ground surfaces required.

Zone 1 (5–30 ft)

Vegetation must be clean, green, and well-maintained.

Zone 2 (30–100 ft)

Less stringent but still requires vegetation management — dead wood and tree litter removal.

Tree Spacing Requirements

Tree limbs must be pruned at least 10 feet from chimneys and other openings. Tree crowns need lateral spacing of at least 10 feet or two times the tree’s height, whichever is greater.

Local Resources

Spokane County residents can request a free Firewise Risk Assessment — a District Forester visits your property and identifies practical ways to reduce wildfire risk.
